Maggie Thatcher statue

Been unveiled in Grantham (Her birthplace) and has already been the subject of hostility and objects being thrown at it.

Who honestly thought this was a good idea to put this thing up?

Regardless of who’s side you are on politically, to put up a statue of probably one of the most controversial figures in British history and someone that is hated by so many is baffling.

A horrible woman bent on vengeance. Did a lot of damage to the infrastructure of the country. But I'm happy for her to have a place where the pigeons can have target practice.

In effect you're saying that there isn't a shred of evidence that Thatcher protected Smith or Savile but some unspecified rum things used to go on in the olden days, so it's OK for you claim against the actual facts, that she and other people you don't like, did .

Where is that happening?

She was an important political figure, and like ALL (important) political figures she has a darker side. That's what politics is.

She, like politicians, was instrumental in shaping the world, not just the north of the UK where all the mines selfishly happened to be.

She happened to put Grantham on the map, but I knew where it was already (surprisingly, in the 1970s it had electricity and even an automatic telephone exchange) so no thoughts either way on that.

But in that era, what famous person was ever prosecuted for this type of crime? I cant think of any. Yet we now know that this type of crime was rife in institutions like the church, sports, schools etc. We now have that on record. Various people who grew up in that era in various institutions have come forward to say that they were abused.

Civil servants of the day have gone on record to say that such allegations against politicians and senior figures were hushed up regularly.

To say they were investigated and found to be unsustainable in a court of law doesnt actually change the fact that lots of people actually knew these things were happening. And they knew that these people were guilty. Yet through technicality and the context of the time, let these things go and carried on dealing with these vile people.

The issue isnt that she didnt believe there was merit to the allegations. Senior aids had briefed her. It seems the issue that they weren't proven in court was good enough for her to not have a problem with these honours.

Make of that what you will.

The reasons were NOT 'swept under the carpet'. They were investigated and found to be unsustainable in a court of law. Smith would certainly have been acquitted, as your quote implicitly states.

Unless you are in favour of banning innocent people from honours on the whim of political honours, then Thatcher was right to OK his gong.

As for Savile your argument is somewhat circular. You claim (probably correctly) the the BBC were protecting him and then act all outraged that the rest of the country, including Thatcher and Prince Charles, was fooled. The man raised tens of millions of pounds for charity, in the most ostentatious way possible - he did 'save Stoke Mandeville'. In retrospect, this was obviously a ploy to deflect attention away from his evil paedophile (and other) activities, but at the time you'd have had to be pretty cynical to suspect an apparent saint of this. Yes, many people thought him, a bit dodgy', but it's hardly the same thing is it?

Sydney, Thatcher supported Pol Pot when he was in exile, after the Vietnamese deposed him and took over Cambodia. It was more about my enemy's enemy is my friend than about agreeing with his policies.

Any right wing govt at the time would probably have preferred Commies who commit atrocities on their own people as they were still worried about the domino effect and Pol Pot was the poster boy for why communism is bad.
